James Howey

About Me

Originally from Waimate in South Canterbury, I have extensive clinical experience over a period of 28 years within a variety of Counselling and Education Institutions in both Australia and New Zealand.
I have full membership with NZAC (New Zealand Association of Counsellors).

My Approach

The experience of engaging in counselling is a deeply personal journey that affects all of us in different ways, and sometimes in ways we would never have expected. By us talking together through your concerns, counselling can support you to see solutions you didn’t know were there. It can also help you find ways to manage better and move on in your life

I understand and honour that each person’s story is unique in that we are all affected by life in different ways. I also understand the importance of being respectful of each person’s culture and belief systems.

My clinical work is shaped by several different counselling modalities and frameworks, including:

  • Family Therapy
  • Couples Therapy
  • Cognative Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Solution Focused Therapy
  • Trauma-Informed Counselling
  • Enneagram personality and transformative insight work
  • Lifestage Transition work
  • Mid-life ‘Crisis’ and Reintegration work
  • Counselling with Teenagers
  • Counselling work with Men and Boys
  • Counselling work with Women
  • Therapeutic Group Counselling
  • Loss and Grief Counselling
  • LGBTQI Informed Counselling
  • Counselling with individuals, families and friends affected by suicide

I am also able to offer online counselling via;

  • Zoom
  • Teams
  • Phone

Supervision

As an NZAC approved Supervisor I offer supervision for counsellors, counsellors-in-training and leadership/staff in other work sectors.

I understand the work of “supervision” as a safe and reflective space to explore one’s own clinical practice, professional identity, and to move further towards the best practice one can offer those consulting us.
It is also a place for personal support for practitioners who give so much to others.
I welcome an opportunity to meet together informally for no charge to explore your supervision needs.
